Which chipset do you need?

A620, B650, B850, X870, B860 and Z890 explained: what each one adds, what's worth paying for, and today's cheapest board for each.

The short answer

Pick the CPU first. Its socket decides the board family: AMD Ryzen 7000/8000/9000 use AM5, and Intel Core Ultra 200S uses LGA 1851. Then choose a chipset based on the features you'll actually use.

  • B650 / B850The right pick for most AMD builds, including a Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming PC. They support overclocking and fast PCIe 5.0 SSDs for less money than X870.
  • A620Tight budgets with a 6- or 8-core Ryzen. No CPU overclocking and no PCIe 5.0, but it runs a Ryzen 5 just fine.
  • X870 / X870EIf you want USB4, lots of M.2 slots and USB ports, or a sturdy board for a 16-core Ryzen 9.
  • B860Most Intel Core Ultra builds. Memory overclocking works; CPU overclocking doesn't.
  • Z890Intel "K" chips you plan to overclock, or when you need the extra connections.

What a chipset actually decides

The CPU does most of the work, and any board with the right socket will run it. The chipset (and the board maker's choices around it) decides the extras: whether you can overclock, how many fast slots and ports you get, and how fast the graphics card and SSD slots run.

"Memory overclocking" (EXPO/XMP memory profiles) works on every chipset here, A620 included. Features marked "some" or "most" depend on the board, so check the board's spec sheet.

Which differences actually matter

  • PCIe 5.0 for graphics barely matters today. Current graphics cards run within a few percent on PCIe 4.0. Don't pay extra just for a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot.
  • PCIe 5.0 for SSDs matters only if you buy a PCIe 5.0 drive. Most people are happy with a PCIe 4.0 SSD (see the NVMe vs SATA guide).
  • CPU overclocking matters less than it used to. Modern Ryzen and Core Ultra chips already boost close to their limits. Ryzen X3D chips gain little from it. A B-series board is fine for most people.
  • Power delivery (VRM) matters for big CPUs. A 16-core Ryzen 9 or Core Ultra 9 needs a board with solid power stages and heatsinks. Cheap A620 and entry B-series boards can hold these chips back under long heavy loads.
  • Connections are the real difference between tiers. Pricier boards add more M.2 slots, more and faster USB ports, faster networking (2.5–5 Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7) and nicer BIOS tools.

Buying tips

  • Match the board size to your case. ATX is the full size; Micro-ATX is shorter with fewer slots; Mini-ITX is tiny with two memory slots and usually one PCIe slot. See the PC Cases page.
  • Every AM5 and LGA 1851 board uses DDR5. See the DDR4 vs DDR5 guide.
  • Check the BIOS version for newer CPUs. Older AM5 boards may need a BIOS update for the newest Ryzen chips. Many boards have a "BIOS Flashback" button that updates without a CPU installed.
  • Need Wi-Fi? Buy a "WiFi" model instead of adding a card later. It's usually only a little more.
  • Count the M.2 slots and USB ports you need now, plus one or two spare. That decides the tier more than the chipset name does.
